Chowdhury`s magic realism merges the unexpected with the familiar, the beautiful with the repulsive. The disquieting image of the `Flower-Eater` rises, magnetic yet menacing, from the surrounding void. The piece is an unpredictable conflation of Modernist draughtsmanship and intricate floral motifs reminiscent of those used in Indian miniatures.

Chowdhury`s distinctive, somewhat harsh, cross-hatching technique combines with the exquisite paper cut outs to create a disturbing optical sensation in the viewer, the entwining lines appear to quiver with an uncanny persistence. "I sense a vibration that is distracting. There is a certain power in the stillness of an object. Stillness is a form of speed while not in force. It is stillness that can create greater tension in a work of art." (From an interview with the artist, Saffronart.com) The intricate patterning of the proto-human figure, which resembles both a mosaic and the slimy skin of a reptile, fascinates and repels in turns. The creature is depicted as simultaneously precious and predatory.
