This metal mask with a peaked crown represents Khandoba, a deified 'vira' or folk hero-king who is believed to be a form or incarnation of Lord Shiva. A popular family deity, Khandoba is worshipped in west and south India, and is the patron of farmers and warriors. Like mukha lingas, these masks are used to front and give a face or iconic form to the abstract Shiva lingam, the most sacred form of this powerful god. Sometimes they are placed next to the ligam, and may be taken out in processions on festive occasions to represent it, including the annual pilgrimage to the Khandoba temple in Jejuri, Maharashtra.
