The ram is a symbol associated with a particular sect of Shaivite adherents who have deified Daksha, the father-in-law of Lord Shiva and one of his most faithful attendants. Daksha is believed to be a 'Prajapati' and one of Lord Brahma's sons, and is frequently portrayed with the head of a ram with spiral horns. Sculptures like these were used in temples as processional elements or votive offerings that were placed before the icon of Shiva.
