Gopal Saha is from the village of Laheriagunj in the Madhubani district of Bihar. Physically handicapped in his lower limbs, he was a tea maker until he took up painting as a full-time profession. Saha is one of the most innovative male artists practicing in the Mithila tradition, and is one of the few artists from this region who has painted his own biography, social satire, and scenes from daily life besides the regular Mithila subjects. His paintings of 'Englishman' for example are a reflection on the western buyers who visit his village. Saha’s painting is characterised by his unique colour combinations and flawless line.
