Hugo Vilfred Pedersen was born in 1870 in Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He made extensive expeditions to the East and spent close to two decades travelling across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India, where he made several paintings of the landscapes and people he encountered.
