Dutch artist Marius Bauer was born in 1867, in The Hague, Netherlands. He studied at The Hague’s Royal Academy of Art under Jan Phillip Koelman and won several medals despite leaving the academy before graduating. He decided to take up Orientalism as his principal subject-one which he would become best known for-following a study trip to Istanbul in 1888, financed by art dealership, Van Wisselingh & Co. He subsequently made several trips to various eastern countries, including Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, India, Ceylon, and the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia). The subject of the present lot is a grand scene that Bauer likely witnessed on one of his travels to India. He made two journeys, the first in 1897-98 followed by another in 1924-25 by which he had exhibited his works across the United States and Europe and gained considerable prestige. He visited several cities including Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Benares, Agra, Gwalior, Delhi, Bombay, Baroda, and Hyderabad. He made sketches and drawings at different locations during these travels, which he later developed into etchings, watercolours and paintings with his characteristic, impressionistic strokes. Bauer received several honours for his work, including the Order of the Crown, which was bestowed on him by King Albert I of Belgium in 1911, and the Order of the Netherlands Lion-the oldest and highest civilian order of chivalry in the Netherlands-in 1927.
