Marius Bauer was born on 25 January 1867 in The Hague Netherlands. He began his studies at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague but did not complete them as he did not agree with the institute’s pedagogy.

Marius Bauer was born on 25 January 1867 in The Hague Netherlands. He began his studies at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague but did not complete them as he did not agree with the institute’s pedagogy.
He was initially known as an etcher, with Rembrandt being a big influence on these works. Like other Dutch artists of the period, Bauer was interested in the East. He visited Algeria, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Egypt, India and Morocco many times. In 1897 travelled extensively across India for six months, spending time in Agra, Ajmer, Baroda Benaras, Bharatpur, Delhi, Gwalior, Hyderabad Jaipur, Mathura, Palitana and Udaipur.
Bauer was appointed a Riddler in the Order of the Orange Nassau in 1900 and a Riddler in the ORder of the Netherlands in 1927. He was bestowed with the Order of the Crown in 1911 by King Albert I.
He died on 18 July 1932 in Amsterdam.
