Hugo Vilfred Pedersen was born on 25 January 1870 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
After graduating from the Academy, Pedersen made many trips to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India over two decades. He spent his travels painting the landscapes he saw and making portraits of people he met. Pedersen generally made portraits of the common populace though some of his most notable works are those of royalty. His portrait of the ruler of Surakarta in Java is part of the Royal Dutch Collection. He also painted a portrait of Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of India, in 1903, probably at the Delhi Durbar.
Pedersen died on 4 May 1959.
