For decades Krishen Khanna has grappled with the question “to paint or not to paint”. He has often said, “When I draw, I feel I should leave the drawing as is and also wish to paint it in colour.” This selection of important drawings by the artist in this exhibition, presented in anticipation of Khanna’s centenary year, are illustrative of this persistent dilemma that has accompanied him throughout his career. These sketches reflect not only his technical virtuosity as a draughtsman but also his ability to bring his observations to life on canvas with spontaneity and exuberance, while maintaining the representational elements of his subjects. Khanna’s art is predominantly figurative, with a focus on the human condition, and has been shaped by his experiences during Partition and his keen observations of the world around him. The works in this exhibition represent key themes that have defined the artist’s long career of over six decades, notably his exploration of the subaltern, migrant labourers, his iconic bandwallahs and other musicians, and his memories of his changing surroundings.
