Lancelot Ribeiro (1933 – 2010)

Lancelot Ribeiro was an Indian Modernist who was also the half-brother of Francis Newton Souza. Following his move to London in 1950, he abandoned his studies in accountancy to take up painting. From the 1960s onwards, he held several one-man and group shows, which were immensely successful. Among his patrons, Dr. Homi Bhabha was one of the most encouraging and supportive, having bought and commissioned several paintings by the artist. Ribeiro painted using oils and showed a unique blend of Indian graphic art and Abstract Expressionism. Last year, Asia House held a major retrospective that showcased works from his estate—“Restless Ribeiro, An Indian Artist in Britain”, which was met with resounding accolades.

The ‘Ribeiro’ Monograph, by David Buckman, is being published by Francis Boutle Publishers, UK. David Buckman has been an author and journalist for over 40 years and now concentrates on writing in the arts.
