The royal carpet workshops set in Kashan, were producing some of the finest examples of carpets of the Persian world. These were set by the Persian rulers not only for the use in the royal palaces but as gifts to other rulers and more importantly they saw it as a means of trade and revenue generation.
Kashan is located in North Central Persia and the carpets designs are mostly of floral and curvilinear patterns set within a geometric format. Here the main field is a deep indigo which offsets an intricate filigree of arabesque floral ornamentation. The central medallion is denser as are the spandrels on the niches. The border is fretwork of alternating palmette and rosettes set in an orange background.
The beauty of this carpet lies in the orchestration of color and form that has resulted in a piece which is harmonious.
