Carpet weaving in Kashan dates back to the 16th century when Safavid dynasty established rule in Persia for the following two centuries.The rulers of this dynasty recognized the potential of promoting the arts and crafts of the region for commercial benefits and this was one of the key factors that led to thesetting up of the carpet weaving workshops in the region along with pottery, miniature painting, books and textiles.
Manuscript illustration was a major art form in royal courts and the designs created for them went on to become the blue print from which patterns for carpets and textiles were developed.It is not surprising to see the predilection towards linear design despite the fact that it makes the process of replicating the designs in the hand knotting technique that much more difficult and time consuming.In this carpet from Kashan one sees the play between red which is the color of the field and blue is for thelowers. An unusual feature of this carpet is the treatment of the niches, which has floral vine set in an light blue angular arms reminiscent of the ceramic tiles that adorn the ponds in a palace.
