D L N Reddy was born in 1949 in a small village in Andhra Pradesh. He did his Diploma in Painting from Fine Arts College, Hyderabad, in 1969. He then joined the MS University, Baroda, in 1971, to study graphics art.

Reddy paints with an almost unnerving realism. Hyderabad based art critic and writer Ramanand Naidu points out, "there are some artists who believe in the intrinsic worth of formal delineation to such a degree that, that itself becomes their crucial premise."

His works reveal his penchant for producing amazingly volumnesque effects with the greatest economy of means. The nude figure, for instance, whether squatting, reclining or sitting, is a leitmotif in several of his paintings. In the best of his nudes, there is a raw physicality. In some of the twisted, bifurcated faces of the nude figures; there are clear echoes of Picasso.

A figurative painter, most of Reddy`s figures echo mood rather than meaning. The result is that it heightens the visual experience. The artist has worked with various mediums, including graphics, sculpture, oils and even glass.

He has participated in more than 200 exhibitions across the world. "I have always felt a sense of liberation, participating in shows all over the world. I have never neglected painting, even when I am traveling, or even when I was involved with graphics work."

In 1982, he exhibited in an Indo-German artists` workshop held in Braunschineigl, West Germany. He used this opportunity to travel extensively across Europe.

D L N Reddy lives and works out of Hyderabad.
