As a contemporary miniature painter, Sumaira Tazeen’s works deal with the role and expectations of a woman in Pakistani society. Drawing from personal experiences, she touches upon the pressures and anxieties of marriage, the absence of a man in the family, and the contradictions in social mentality and behaviour. She incorporates feminine symbols into her work such as embroidery and other crafts that are directly applied onto the canvas.... In an artist statement, Tazeen explains, “My works are the depiction of a path running parallel with my life. I have always looked at it through the eyes of a woman, who is conscious of the issues prevalent in the society and is willing to bring a positive change in them.”

Born 1974 in Hyderabad, Pakistan, Sumaira Tazeen graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 1996. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at Canvas Gallery, Karachi, in 2007; and Rohtas II, Lahore, in 2006. She has participated in several group exhibitions in Pakistan and internationally including ‘Love's Microcosm: Contemporary Miniatures from Pakistan’ at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2009.

Tazeen has held several workshops on teaching art for students and international artists at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and in Pakistan. She has also received many honours such as the Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship from the British Council, Pakistan; the Haji Mohammad Sharif Award for Miniature Painting; and a Merit Scholarship from the National College of Arts, Lahore.
