Rathindranath was the oldest son of Rabindranath Tagore. Rathindranath was the oldest son of Rabindranath Tagore. He studied Agricultural Science in Illinois and his training in the sciences served him well at Santiniketan, where he played an important role as a teacher and later, as the Vice Chancellor at Visva Bharati. Rathindranath taught genetics at the school, and was the architect of the garden at Santiniketan. His love for flowers, combined with the precision of science, aided him in his botanical paintings. Renowned art historian Stella Kramrisch said of his paintings, “To the luxuriant harmony he has brought plants from many parks of the earth and from the undergrowth of the Indian jungle; he has made them all thrive together, each in the soil it required. He cares for them, knows and paints them. With loving science he draws the firm logic of their patterns and gives them the space and ground on which they breathe their fragrance.”

Following Rathindranath’s death in 1961, a majority of his works were placed in the collection of the Visva Bharati archives, and at Guha Ghar, a museum dedicated to him in the Uttarayan Complex of Santiniketan.
