By the late 1940s, Picasso's fame was widespread and he was the confirmed master of Western art. In 1948 Picasso had acquired his own villa, La Galloise, near the southern French village of Vallauris. He was working and living full time with his partner Françoise Gilot and their two children, Claude and Paloma and a time of success, contentment and stability in his family life set in. He continued to paint and draw obsessively, mostly depicting his wife and children, but in the summer of 1953 he painted numerous views of Vallauris and the region. On the 10th June Picasso painted two versions of a neighboring villa on the hill called Le Transformateur. It is a typical villa of the region with red terracotta tiles and gentle slopping roof. The work is confidently executed in thick, expressive brushstrokes and Picasso has used the pointed end of his brush to scrape into the painting and outline the trees and foreground, imbuing the surface of the picture with dimension and texture. The work was acquired from Picasso by the legendary dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler who owned the Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris, where it was then acquired by the wealthy American collector Herman Goldsmith from New York.
