Attiya Shaukat’s creative practice draws heavily from personal tragedy. After suffering a horrific accident, Shaukat was left paralyzed from the waist down. After suffering a horrific accident, Shaukat was left paralyzed from the waist down. She weaves her personal struggles into her art, using poignant images such as spines, vertebrae, and mechanical parts, to create a dichotomy between the past and present, the organic and the mechanic.

Shaukat graduated from the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, the only college in the world offering a concentration in miniature painting. She, along with several other contemporary Pakistani artists, is reviving the age-old tradition of miniature painting by incorporating them into modern contexts. Apart from the size of the composition, miniature painting also refers to a working technique where fine brushes are used to painstakingly illustrate minute details.

Shaukat received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 2004. She also holds another Bachelor’s degree from the Lahore College of Women. Her many solo exhibitions include ‘A Step Forward’ at Canvas Gallery, Karachi, in 2008; ‘Bones/Steel’ at Rohtas 2, Lahore; and ‘Free Fall’ at Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2004. Among the group exhibitions she has participated in are ‘Reprise’ and ‘The Human Dichotomy’ at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2011 and 2008 respectively.
