Farida Batool was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, and her work explores the everyday tumult and fear of violence extant in Pakistan, concomitant with the nostalgia and memories of her homeland. In grappling with these sociopolitical realities, her vantage point remains her gender, her experience as a female in Pakistan, adding a layer of complexity to the relationships she explores.
Often employing the medium of lenticular prints, or 3D holographic photographs, Batool compels the viewer to physically engage with her work; her multiplicities of viewpoints and realities are meant to be experienced, rather than viewed passively. Her body of work using digital images and drawings is equally provocative – these quieter works question explicit power structures and dichotomies, and points of contact between the rich and poor, religious and secular, personal and political.
Batool received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 1993, and her Master’s degree in Art History and Theory from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, Australia, in 2003. She is a PhD candidate in media and film studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
The artist has exhibited internationally at galleries and museums, some of which include Aicon Gallery, New York; the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai; Portimao Museum, Portugal; Rohtas Gallery, Lahore; Green Cardamom, London; Third Line, Dubai; the Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon; and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Ithaca.
