"Form and colour underwent change, as they passed from one canvas to the other, as if waking from sleep - two worlds, both the similar and dissimilar at the same time." - AKBAR PADAMSEE The present lot, a luminous metascape, was part of Akbar Padamsee's solo exhibition, Mirror Images , at Pundole Art Gallery in 1994. Padamsee's experimentation with colour, form and structure, led him to the creation of a series of 'Mirror Images' such as this diptych in the 1990s. These paintings recalled the colour palette that dominated his metascapes of the 1970s, and like them, were not confined by time or place. Though Padamsee terms them "mirror images," the two canvases don't actually mirror each other. In an interview with journalist Meher Pestonji, Padamsee explained that he wanted to "confront the viewer with an alternate vision... After reversing the image I have to fight symmetry. A painting shouldn't become like a jewellery or sari design. So I retain the mirrored image in the drawing but the painting is quite different... Balancing colours on two sides of the mirror-image would lead to consonance, prettiness, which I would avoid." (Meher Pestonji, "An Alternate Vision," The Times of India , 20 November 1994, online)
