The Tandan Collection

This painting shows a prince seated against a bolster with his son and heir. He receives a courtier who kneels before him and delivers a document. An attendant stands to the right. An assortment of articles-paan daans, hookahs, rosewater sprinklers and silver caskets-lie scattered about them.

The distinct Kishangarh style of elongated faces with sharp features and upturned eyes was first developed in the mid-18th century by Nihal Chand, who was the court patron to Savant Singh (1699 - 1764). There is an inscription on the back of this painting ascribing it to Nihal Chand, but this is probably a different artist, who was also named Nihal Chand.
