PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

The palace terrace with the expanse of a lake to the horizon was a typical setting for portraits of Kishangarh royalty. This portrait bears a good resemblance to Maharaja Surat Singh of Bikaner and may well be by the accomplished Kishangarh artist Amar Chand. A similar portrait but with more figures is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Acc. No. 1990.1285). For further discussion see N.N. Haidar, The Kishangarh School of Painting, 1680-1850, unpublished doctoral thesis, Oxford, 1995, pp. 195-196, fig. 199.
