PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

This portrait shows a Sikh nobleman dressed in white, seated against a bolster on a palace terrace, smoking a hookah. The traditions of the Kangra school are seen in the delicacy of the lines and the "clear, pure, bright...gossamer lightness" of the colour palette.

"By early nineteenth century the Sikhs had become a force to reckon with, and their power was exceedingly felt in the neighbouring hill-states." (Tandan, Indian Miniature Painting, p. 133)
