The courtier in this portrait is seated on a pink rug, holding a rose, a sword by his side. His jama is patterned with roses, and his turban bears sprigs of flowers. According to Archer, Jammu paintings are characterised by "pale colors, simplifying geometry and flowing rhythmical line." (Archer, Indian Miniatures) In the mid- to late-eighteenth century, the state of Jammu became the chief power in the Jammu Hills. Merchants and artisans from the Punjab plains migrated to Jammu, and it became the chief trade route in the Hills. Artists appointed at the courts of kings frequently made portraits celebrating the local ruler.
