"Colours can be in love with each other, Colours can reveal innumerable human sentiments that we are capable of and I am trying to make them live on the canvas." - S H RAZA In a departure from the earth tones which Raza used to evoke the warmth of his native forests of Mandla, the present lot uses cool colours to present the winter landscape of the title. Whites, blues and greens with only a smattering of orange suggest a cold and perhaps soothing climate. Painted in 1966, when Raza had moved away from cityscapes and figuration into what was termed lyrical expressionism, the fluid brushwork is reminiscent of watercolour painting. In his continuing attempt to understand the nuances of colour, nature and emotions, Raza creates an abstract representation of all three.
