A Pair of 'Thuria' Ear Studs

These impressive ear plugs were worn by women in the Jorhat and Shivsagar districts of Assam, and derived from 'nadaung' or ear-cylinders worn by tribal peoples in Myanmar. '"The most original ear ornament of upper Assam is the thuria, which can still be seen in older women's distended earlobes...The design symbolises a lotus with a heavy stem. The hollow form is chased without mould and filled with wax. The rubies are fixed in kundan setting" (Waltraud Ganguly, Earring: Ornamental Identity and Beauty in India, B.R.
