This palanquin finial represents a rare form and rendering. Normally, the subject would have been a 'makara' or elephant. The use of a horse, which is the 'vahana' or vehicle of Khandoba, a folk form of Lord Shiva, perhaps denotes that this may have been a temple piece. The size of the finial also supports that possibility.
