Palanquins were symbols of power and status in days gone by, very akin to the status a car affords to its owner in modern society. Kings, nobles, landlords, and priests would be transported in palanquins that were elaborately embellished. This ornate finial, used to cap a palanquin pole, bears the face of a 'makara' or water-monster and has a strong sculptural presence. The mythical 'makara' combines the features of a crocodile, elephant and fish, and is the vehicle of the goddess Ganga, the Ganges river personified, and Lord Varuna, the god of terrestrial waters. Its magical powers relate to the fertility of aquatic life.
