Once Upon a Time: Trees Were Our Friends

Signed in English (lower right)
Pen and ink on paper
28 x 20 in (71.1 x 50.8 cm)

Pradyumna Kumar is an award-winning tribal artist, and the first Indian to ever win the prestigious UNESCO Noma Concours in 2006. For most of his professional life, he was a land surveyor, till a surgery cost him his job. He then took to art, creating paintings influenced by Madhubani stylistic traditions but with themes and topics from his own imagination and interest. Interestingly, he brings to Madhubani art both his map-making skills as well as a keen observation of plant forms. His trees have movement, suggesting the sighing breeze passing through the leaves.
