Property of an Important Collector

Characterized by bold lines and bright colours, Paithan Paintings were used by itinerant bards to recount stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Discovered in a small village called Pinguli near Savantwadi in the state of Maharashtra, they are closely related in style to the leather puppets from Andhra Pradesh (lots 45 and 46).
