PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

This Provincial Mughal painting shows a pink complexioned prince leaning on his sword in a pose typical of royal portraiture in the Mughal courts. His royal stature is evident from the halo around his head, another characteristically Mughal influence, which was "a device originally borrowed from the European tradition." (Relia, Indian Portrait, p. 16) The portrait bears similarities to a painting of Prince Muhammad Mu'azzam, heir to Emperor Aurangzeb, before his ascension to the throne in 1707. The prince in the present lot is similarly adorned by a turban with a jewelled aigrette, and a gold embroidered patka tied around his green jama.
