This lovely stone sculpture has great presence and power. The saint is shown seated on a horizontal base in the lalitasana posture. His right hand holds an axe. His chest is broad and powerful in typical Pallava tradition. Simple ornaments adorn his body. His facial expression is serious yet serene. The sculpture has a mystic aura that is typical of the important Pallava School.

The Story of Chandikeswara

Chandikeswara, born as Vicharasarman, was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva when he was a boy. He used to make shiva lingas of sand and make offerings of cow's milk to them. Once, his father Yajnadatta, who was against this practice kicked one of the lingas in anger. Vicharasarman in a fit of rage chopped off his father's leg with an axe. Such was his devotion for his lord. This spur of the moment reaction pleased Shiva immensely. He appeared immediately and embraced him. He made him the head of the Ganas (dwarf devotees of Shiva) and renamed him Chandikeswara.

Chandikeswaras can still be seen as part of the architecture at various ancient temples, most often placed at the exit. It is said that he keeps a tab on the visitors entering and leaving the temple.
