Diopside

Known as the Black Star of India, after its most significant source, star diopside is a relatively uncommon gemstone. These stones, like star sapphires and rubies, contain several needle-like inclusions that are aligned to reflect light in a star-like pattern. Unlike other 'star' gemstones that exhibit such asterism, the star diopside only reflects four rays, rather than the usual six or more.

In addition to its rarity, or perhaps because of it, star diopside is associated with several layers of myth and folklore. These opaque cabochons are linked with the zodiac sign Pisces, and the birthstone month of March, and are believed to be for a wearer's heart, lungs and general circulation. They are also said to heal trauma through the cleansing of tears, and are thus sometimes referred to as 'crying stones'. Star diopside has also been linked, in various traditions, with love, passion and creativity.
