A landscape painter of great skill, he became very well known and exhibited with Colnaghi and Marlborough Gallery in London. The Queen Mother had to queue outside Colnaghi in order to buy his work and Prince Philip invited him on a tour of the Antarctic in 1956. These paintings, considered some of his best, hang at Balmoral.

Edward Seago made eight major painting trips to France between 1951 and 1967. He frequently sailed his boat Capricorn across the Channel and would moor in the Basin d'Honfleur before beginning his journey up the Seine to Paris.

The banks of the Seine and the busy Parisian boulevards inspired him to paint some of his finest urban scenes, capturing the Place de la Concorde and the Jardins des Tuileries, as well as the Champs Elysées. He wrote: "For my part I was fascinated by the sunlight and shadow of those crowded walks beneath the chestnut trees, by the ever moving colourful pattern of men, women and children, dogs and perambulators..." (Edward Seago, With Capricorn to Paris, 1956, pp. 89-90). His enjoyment and success in capturing this dappled light and relaxed atmosphere is particularly evident in the present painting.
