Sanjay Kumar Singh creates multi-layered collaged drawings, in bright as well as muted hues, depicting his experiences of urban life in the metropolis of New Delhi. His compositions consist of bus tickets, bills and other images, which represent the artist’s day-to-day experiences and articulate his thoughts on city life.
Of particular concern to the artist is the city’s ever expanding transportation network. He says, “I feel with the Metro running across the city, the number of buses will come down drastically in the next five years. I therefore think it makes sense to preserve bus tickets now, as we might not see them in the future. So my paintings show Blueline buses, conductors, tickets, red lights, zebra crossings and petrol pumps.”
The outline of Singh’s illustrations, objects and figures alike, seem fluid, opposing their true forms, which are strong and well defined. This unusual technique, which appears to be a trademark of the artist, makes his compositions appear to be in motion. The unstill nature of the canvas could also be interpreted as another aspect of fast-paced city life.
Sanjay Kumar Singh was born in 1981. He completed his Bachelor’s degree from the College of Art, Patna, in 2005. In the same year, he received a two-year scholarship from the Ministry Cultural Development, India. Singh had a solo show “Life Within”, at Art Gallery, Patna, in 2005 and he participated in “Reasonal Race”, a show curated by Subodh Gupta at Bodhi Art, New Delhi, in 2007. He is also the recipient of the state level AIFACS 2002 award, in Patna.
