In 1875 it was decided that the Prince of Wales should make a full ceremonial visit to India. To coincide with the start of the tour, there was published on October 16th a special extra number entitled ‘India and the Prince of Wales’ for The Illustrated London News.

In it were illustrated the principal Indian cities, temples, natural scenery, native manners and customs, sports and pastimes, and all the chief objects of interest in relation to the royal tour.

The description was written by George Augustus Sala, with the local details being supplied by an eminent Indian resident. The issue has 50 pages, was priced at one shilling, and measures 41.2 x 28 cm. The brown and ochre pictorial wrapper shows an elephant with a howdah flanked by other animals indigenous to India (a camel, tiger, and wild boar). The frame is made up of native flora and distinctive features of Indian architecture, the whole surmounted by the Prince of Wales feathers.
