Nephew of the pioneering Gond artist, Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat Raman is notable for capturing new-age themes and narratives through the traditional artform. He works with a range of techniques and mediums, including murals, etchings, illustrated books and animation.
Shyam’s introduction to the art world began at the age of 13, when he started working as an apprentice to his famed uncle. During this time, he was introduced to maestros such as Jagdish Swaminathan and Manjit Bawa. In the years that followed, he made a living by painting houses and signboards, and working as domestic help. It was only after the death of his uncle that he actively pursued his artistic calling. Determined to carry forward Jangarh’s legacy, he wholly committed to carving out a space for Pardhan Gond art in the mainstream Indian art world.
Venkat Raman explores a variety of themes through his works. From detailed depictions of folklore, nature and wildlife encountered during his childhood, to illustrations of tragic scenes he witnessed during the attacks on the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, Venkat Raman uses the Gond art form as an instrument to share his stories. His works have been showcased in multiple exhibitions around the world.
The artist lives and works in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
