How We Do at The End of The World
Inspired by mythological narratives, present day imperialism and queer politics, Chitra Ganesh uses her work as a means to question the many oppositions that lie within the framework of the so-called ‘society’ we live in. Inspired by mythological narratives, present day imperialism and queer politics, Chitra Ganesh uses her work as a means to question the many oppositions that lie within the framework of the so-called ‘society’ we live in. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Chitra received her Bachelor’s degree in Art-Semiotics and Comparative Literature from Brown University in 1996, and her Master’s degree in Fine Art from Columbia University in 2002.
Through her digital collage, drawing, mural painting, photography and installation work, Ganesh explores different cultures, both Eastern and Western. Using her diverse visual vocabulary, she ceaselessly strives to eliminate all those boundaries that exist in reality between race, sex and sexual orientation. Her bold and surreal images explore varying representations of female sexuality and power. Ganesh’s unique approach to storytelling and repeated references to Hindu mythology may be traced back to her Indian roots. In her comic book like sequences of digital prints, Ganesh includes snippets of text, successfully marrying the traditional with the post-modern in a truly unique aesthetic.
Solo exhibitions of Ganesh’s work include ‘Project Space’, Haas & Fischer, Zurich, 2007; ‘Upon Her Precipice’, Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, 2007; ‘Written on Wind and Water’, Goliath Visual Space, New York, 2005; and ‘Her Secret Missions’, Momenta Art, New York, 2003. She has participated in several group shows including ‘7 Beauties’, Contrast Gallery, Beijing and Shanghai, 2008; ‘The Furious Gaze’, Montehemorso Cultural Center, Spain, 2008; ‘Contemporary Indian Art: Between Continuity and Transformation’, Spazio Oberdan, Milan, 2007; ‘Thermocline of Art: New Asian Waves’, ZKM Gallery, Germany, 2007; Nature Morte Gallery, New Delhi, 2007 and 2006; ‘One Way or Another’, Asia Society, New York, 2006; and ‘What War?’, White Box, New York, 2006. Ganesh received the Astraea Visual Arts award in 2004 and a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2005. The artist lives and works in New York.
