Paritosh Sen was a versatile, prolific artist and writer who began his training at the Madras Art School, alongside artists such as K C S Panicker and Prodosh Dasgupta. In the early 1940s, Sen co-founded the Calcutta Group, and a few years later, he left for France to further his training at the Academy Andre Lhote, Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Paritosh Sen was a versatile, prolific artist and writer who began his training at the Madras Art School, alongside artists such as K C S Panicker and Prodosh Dasgupta. In the early 1940s, Sen co-founded the Calcutta Group, and a few years later, he left for France to further his training at the Academy Andre Lhote, Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His years in France influenced his work, as seen in the present lot which features Cubist influences. Sen also had the opportunity to meet Pablo Picasso in the 1950s, and has said, "Picasso's works and methods taught me more than what I was prepared for and it took me some time to assimilate the concepts and integrate them with my own work." (Artist quoted in Andrew Buncombe, "Paritosh Sen," The Independent, 18 November 2008, online) Sen explored a variety of media and styles throughout his career, favouring vivid colour and figuration. "At first, the mastery that has gone into the compositions is hardly noticed. Gradually the dominant details begin to make an impact. The precision of linear movement and use of space, the slight distortion and elongation and the contrast of the glowing hues slowly sink in."
