Born in 1977 in Siliguri, West Bengal, Abir Karmakar completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, in 2001, and then his Master’s degree in Fine Art from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 2003.

Karmakar is known for his casual and voyeuristic self-portraits, in which he places his naked body in intimate settings. His body language and the mysterious eye contact he makes with viewers are provocative, offering them his interpretation of sexuality and the fluid nature of identity in contemporary contexts.

Abir Kamarkar’s solo shows include 'Within The Walls' at Gallerie Mirchandani + Steinreucke, Mumbai, and Gallery Espace, New Delhi, in 2008; ‘In The Old Fashioned way’ at Aicon Gallery, London, in 2007; ‘Interiors’ at Gallere Heike Crutz, Berlin, in 2006; and ‘From My Photo Album’ at the Museum Gallery, Mumbai, in 2005. Amongst the recent group exhibitions in which his works have been featured are 'New Fables: Contemporary Voices' at Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2009; 'Long Gone & Living Now' at Gallerie Mirchandani + Steinreucke, Mumbai, in 2009; 'Threshold: Forging Narratives in South Asian Contemporary Art' at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2009; 'Mutant Beauty' at Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008-09; 'A Mazing' at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; and ‘Gallery Weekend’ presented by Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai, at the Baumwollspinnerei Factory Complex, Leipzig, in 2008.
