The unique visual language of Hebbar's work stems from his deep grounding in the culture and traditional arts of Karnataka. His drawings and paintings typically focus on figures from village life, fisherfolk, Kathak dancers and folk musicians. Hebbar's art training in Mysore, Bombay and Paris introduces a unique blend of western art technique into his choice of fundamentally rural, Indian subject matter. Dr. H Meyer The present lots (lot 4 and 5) are from the collection of Dr. H Meyer, father of the current owners and formerly the Manager at CIBA, a subsidiary of CIBA Ltd., a prestigious pharmaceutical company and innovative industry leader based in Basel, Switzerland. CIBA later merged with Sandoz to become Novartis. In 1956, Dr. Meyer appointed Hebbar to execute a mural at the CIBA headquarters in Mumbai. Hebbar soon became a friend of Dr. Meyer and his family, often staying at their home in Switzerland after they left Mumbai. The friendship between the families grew so deep that Prosperity (1980) was gifted to one of Dr. Meyer's children as a wedding present. Dr. Meyer wrote an introduction for the catalogue of Hebbar's 1987 exhibition Coups de Coeur in Geneva, in which Prosperity was included.
