In the 1950s, Ram Kumar developed a powerful, humanist voice, triggered perhaps by his involvement in the French Communist Party. His figures of that period appear forlorn, lonely and lost in thought, reflecting the misery of the layman under a capitalist order, as observed by Ranjit Hoskote.
