"Bindu...refers to the point which goes to form a material body of the Universe...[it] is not only the source, the base, the abode of rest, but also pure illumination" (Kalatattva Kosa, A Lexicon of Fundamental Concepts of the Indian Arts, ed. Bettina Baumer, Volume II, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, pgs. 1-2) Raza's bindu is a striking metaphor for life, and a very powerful image in itself. The artist developed its full potential from the 1980s onwards, using what he learnt from Hindu philosophy and his readings of geometric symbols. This, along with the concept of the panchatatva or five elements- earth, fire, water, sky and wind, represented in colours as black, blue, red, yellow, and white- heighten its significance. Here, the title Bhoomi indicates the earth, the base from which life springs forth. Raza uses colour in concentric bands, radiating outward from a core, thrumming with energy. His use of blue, green and yellow suggests a harmonious co-existence of the elements which is crucial for life to originate.
