Zarina Hashmi, a master printmaker, began her journey with a degree in Mathematics and later pursued woodblock printing in Bangkok and Tokyo, and intaglio in Paris. Her early interest in mathematics and geometry is echoed through her minimalist style and emphasis on structural purity. Hashmi chronicles her life through her work; it represents the stories that moved her, the poetry she read, the borders she crossed, and places she lived. In her exploration of lines, she created the stencil for the present lot, …these cities blotted into the wilderness (Adrienne Rich after Ghalib), a 'portrait' of cities bombed in recent times, that affected her deeply. In these nine memorial-like prints the artist has used lines as a tool to define (or confine) and map out rudimentary terrains. She explores the geographical territories of Grozny, Sarajevo, Srebrenica, Beirut, Jenin, Baghdad, Kabul, Ahmedabad, and New York and the lines and edges of her printed cuts exhibit a rough expressionistic crudeness. They seem to reflect anger at the circumstances, and empathy towards the victims. Each print is inherently different, as each work seems to be localised in its treatment. This involvement, treatment of paper and guttural expression can be seen as Zarina Hashmi's trademark. "The lines of Zarina Hashmi's woodcut-printed and paper-woven maps evoke territorial borders, historical ruptures, and communal scars with a visual language that looks like Minimalism and moves like poetry." (Kaelen Wilson-Goldie, "Zarina Hashmi: Critic's Pick, Art Forum, New York, Apr 21, 2013, accessed online)
