Born in Mumbai in 1954, Anish Kapoor completed his art education in London, first at the Hornsey College of Art, and later at the Chelsea School of Art and Design. Before moving to London, Kapoor lived in Israel for a few years, where he studied electrical engineering.
Working closely with concepts like colour, form, light, surface and volume, Kapoor engages with complex metaphysical juxtapositions in his large sculptures and public art projects. These include the relationships between the tangible and the non-tangible, the present and the absent, the solid and the point.
Today, Kapoor ranks amongst the most acclaimed contemporary sculptors practicing today, and has showcased his work in solo exhibitions in many of the most famous museums in the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the Tate Modern and Royal Academy of Art in London. Furthermore, several of his large-scale installations like 'Cloud Gate', 'Tarantara', 'Temenos' and 'Sky Mirror' have formed a transient or permanent part of the landscapes and skylines of cities and towns around the world. In 2010-11 a dual-location retrospective of Kapoor's work was hosted in India for the first time at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and Mehboob Studio, Mumbai.
Kapoor represented the UK at the XLIV Venice Biennale in 1990, where he won the Premio Duemila Prize. In 1991, he received the prestigious Turner Prize, and in 2002, he was awaded the Unilever Commission for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London. Recently Kapoor was commissioned to create a landmark for the city of London as they host the Olympic Games in 2012. In addition, the artist is a Royal Academician (RA), and was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2003.
The artist lives and works in London.
