The book is a biography of the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong. It is based on extensive research, including interviews with Armstrong, his family, and colleagues, as well as previously unreleased documents and archives.

The book covers Armstrong's life from his childhood in Ohio to his service in the Korean War and his career as a test pilot for NASA, culminating in his historic moon landing in 1969 as the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. The book also explores Armstrong's personal life, including his marriage, family, and hobbies.

"First Man" received critical acclaim and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in biography. The book was later adapted into a feature film directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong. The film was released in 2018 and was also well-received by critics.
