Vishwanath Nageshkar belonged to the first generation of modern Indian artists. Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1910, he was of Goan origin. He moved to Mumbai and enrolled at the Sir J J School of Arts in 1927 to pursue an education in the arts, where he studied under teachers including Captain Gladstone Solomon, graduating in 1931 with a specialisation in frescoes. Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1910, he was of Goan origin. He moved to Mumbai and enrolled at the Sir J J School of Arts in 1927 to pursue an education in the arts, where he studied under teachers including Captain Gladstone Solomon, graduating in 1931 with a specialisation in frescoes. Between 1933 - 1941, Nageshkar continued his education in Paris, Munich and Berlin. His exposure to the European art movements of the time reflected in his paintings, which gradually evolved from his figurative early work to include elements of Cubism and German Expressionism, among others.

After completing his education, Nageshkar worked as a film architect in Germany until the Second World War, during which he had to leave behind his home and studio and moved to London with his German-born wife Edna Henningsen. Nageshkar's artworks of this period depicted the plight of the impoverished, as well as Indian and Biblical themes, and he also continued his work as a film architect in London. The couple returned to Germany in 1953. Over the next few decades, Nageshkar worked as a freelance artist and teacher in various German cities. He eventually settled in Schleswig, where he died in 2001.
