Manisha Gera Baswani’s work consistently retains the tightly constructed detail which is inspired by the miniature format and technique – this singular visuality presents itself whether the artist is working on small formats or expansive canvases, or even her more recent work that introduces collages and a layering into the two-dimensional miniature technique: “What seems to run like a golden thread through her work at the same time is the influence of the Indian miniature painting. There is no borrowing of images from those glorious pictures, and she has been able to resist the obvious temptation of appropriating themes or lifting passages. What she has learned from them is how to build layers of thorugh and embed them in a work…In some ways, the body of Manisha Baswani’s work till date, also offers the viewer choices. There are, of course, no threatening presences here, but you can have different encounters.” (Dr. B.N. Goswamy, Engaging with different worlds, Exhibition catalogue: ‘roots and wings’, Gallery Chemould, p.3)
