Moving on from focussing on the appearance of his subjects, Bendre's style began to reflect his consciousness of a greater truth, of "aspects beyond his immediate experience" (Ram Chatterjee, Bendre: The Painter and the Person, The Bendre Foundation for Art and Culture & Indus Corporation, 1990, p59). His work had, in coming years, broken free of academic conventions and had become more naturalistic-both in style and depiction. His travels had always heavily influenced him and many of his works show a dominance by landscapes.

Commenting on Bendre's approach to depicting what he sees in his art, "He gives prime importance to his visual experience, but he does not resort to naturalistic representation. He interprets it on his canvas in his own terms and offers what he has seen an enjoyed." (Ibid, p61)
