Her Majesty's Army was a well-received book when it was first published. People praised it for its comprehensiveness and accuracy, and it quickly became a standard reference work on the British Army.

The author, Walter Richards, was a military historian and journalist. He was the editor of the Army and Navy Gazette and the author of several other books on military history. Godfrey Douglas Giles, a military artist who served with the British Army in India, Afghanistan, and Egypt, illustrated the books. The books were originally published in two volumes, but a third volume was added in 1891 to cover the Indian and Colonial Forces.

Depicting a variety of divisions in the regiments of the Queen's forces, such as the Royal Artillery, the Horse Guards, the Bengal Cavalry, Victorian forces, the Welsh Regiment, the Royal Marines, etc. Illustrated with beautiful colour plates by Godfrey Douglas Giles, Frank Feller, and others.
