The present lot, a canvas from 1974 executed in the pointillist style, marks one of the most important phases in Bendre’s oeuvre, and illustrates his unique response to European Modernism. Here, the artist combines the scientific style of pointillism, pioneered by Georges Seurat in the late nineteenth century, with his subjective, expressive vision of nature to create a lush beach-scape that reflects his unique artistic sensibility and the Indian environs he was so familiar with.

Building up this waterside scene through a meticulous application of small dots of pigment, Bendre conveys the mood of the place rather than its objective appearance, and involves the viewer in contextualizing the coastal landscape. His muted palette, dominated by greens and blues, conveys the quiet comfort of the scene, spiriting the viewer away from his or her everyday life.
